So You Want More Muscle.

Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and saw a little glimpse of muscle trying to peek through your skin? If you have, hopefully this article will spark something in you to keep working at it. Without going into a lot of detail and terminology about muscles, let me give you the basics. Your skeletal muscles are comprised of fibers that contract when they receive signals from neurons. The better you become at getting your muscles to contract the stronger you become. This takes time and consistency so don’t get frustrated if you don’t see results overnight, you have to be patient.

After you workout, your body will begin to repair or replace damaged muscle fibers by fusing muscle fibers together to form new muscle protein strands. The repair of protein strands (myofibrils) create muscle growth. This process does not occur while you are lifting weights; but afterward when you are at rest. Muscle growth can only occur when the rate of muscle protein synthesis is greater than muscle breakdown.

Preventing muscle breakdown is so important which can easily occur if you are not providing your body with key nutrition to support your activity/fitness level. If you workout really hard and don’t have proper nutrition either as pre/post fuel you are increasing your chances of your body breaking down your muscle for fuel. So, in summary to gain muscle you have to be consistent and I encourage you to isolate your muscles when you work them and allow 24-48 hours for that muscle to rest/repair to allow time for growth. The other key step to follow is proper nutrition.
