Health Benefits of Watermelon for Mom, YUM!

Today is Mother's Day and right around the corner is Memorial Day. Start adding this summertime favorite in your diet or your mothers diet and reap all of these benefits and more.

Watermelon is incredibly hydrating (up to 92% water!, and is a natural diuretic which helps increase the flow of urine, but does not strain the kidneys. Watermelon is also rich in potassium which helps to retain calcium in your body, resulting in stronger bones and joints. Check out the quick list of benefits and more information below.

Helps Reduce Body Fat [1]

The citrulline in watermelon has been shown to reduce the accumulation of fat in our fat cells. Citrulline is an amino acid which converts into arginine with help from the kidneys. Citrulline, when consumed, has the ability to (through a series of steps) block the activity of TNAP (tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase) which makes our fat cells create less fat, and thus helps prevent over-accumulation of body fat. Another benefit of the Citrulline found in watermelon is it has been shown to reduce muscle soreness and improve recovery time following exercise in athletes

Regulates Blood Pressure [2]

The amount of potassium and magnesium present in watermelons is very beneficial in terms of lowering blood pressure. Potassium is considered a vasodilator, meaning that it releases the tension on blood vessels and arteries, thereby stimulating blood flow and reducing the stress on the cardiovascular system. The carotenoids present in these fruits also prevent hardening of artery walls and veins, thereby helping reduce blood pressure and the chances of blood clots, strokes, heart attacks, and atherosclerosis.

Picking the Perfect Watermelon

Look for a watermelon that is firm, heavy, and symmetrical without soft spots or bruising. Tapping the outside can give you a clue as to the texture of the fruit inside. Listen for a light and almost hollow sounding thud; this indicates the water and fruit contained is intact and has a stable structure.

Watermelon is featured this week in our breakfast with a Watermelon Mint Salad. Order next week's meal here.
